Martham Market Road early post windmill was the first mill on site later occupied by a towermill that was built a short distance to the southeast after a fire seriously damaged the postmill in 1786. A later postmill was built as a replacement nearby on the same site. It's probable that the roundhouse of this earlier postmill was used as a storehouse by the owners of the towermill.

Summary

6 th May 1737. Copy of the Will of Robert Lacey (3) late of Martham, husbandman, whereby he gave and devised to Robert Rising (4) his kinsman (1) his mill and mill land freehold. Also, eight ? of land in the east field, south side of Pedars Way. And also the dwelling house wherein the widow Bland there dwelt and the homestall (2) thereunto belonging and barn. To have the same land and dwellings at the first ? ensuing his decease - executed by Robert Lacey (3) in the presence of Mary ? , Martha Land & Robert Sutfield Snr.

Robert Lacey (3) owned the windmill before 1737 when he died. He left it to Robert Rising (4) in his Will.

14 th/15 th March 1745. By indenture of lease and release made between John Rising (8) carpenter, eldest son and heir at law of John Rising late of West Somerton, yeoman, and Elizabeth (6) his wife then deceased who was sister and heir at law of the said Robert Lacey (3) of the one part and Robert Rising (4) of Martham, yeoman, of the other part ? therein that the said John Rising (8) party thereto was and stood lawfully sold, seized in ? in land in the next and immediate remainder and revision expectant upon the determination of the estate of the said Robert Rising (4) who was tenant for life of and in the mill, mill land, tenement or dwelling house ground and hereditaments with their appurtenances therein afore mentioned. It is witnessed that for the consideration therein mentioned the said John Rising (8) party thereto grants and release unto the said Robert Rising (4) the said windmill and land with other hereditaments to hold to and to the use of the said Robert Rising (4) and his heirs forever.

It appears that John Rising Jnr. (8) had a lease on the mill that reverted back to Robert Rising (4)

9 th May 1747. By Indenture between the said Robert Rising (4) and Mary (8) his wife of the one party and Robert Cole of the other part for the lands therein mentioned the said Robert Rising (4) and Mary (4) his wife did grant and devise unto the said Robert Cole all the said premises to hold for 500 years subject to redemption (10) the payment of £126.

Robert Cole (4) appears to have lent Robert Rising £126 as a mortgage on the windmill.

18 th December 1756 . By Indenture tripartite between William Rising (9) and William Cole Exors of the Will of the said Robert Cole of the first part, the said Robert Rising (4) and Mary (4) his wife of the second part and John Barber of the third part the said William Rising (9) and William Cole did assign unto the John Barber all the said premises to hold for the remainder of the said tenure of 500 years subject to redemption (10) payment of £125.

John Barber appears to have taken over as replacement mortgagee on the death of Robert Cole.

12 th April 1760 . Probate of the Will of Robert Rising (4) whereby he gave and devised all his messuages, land, tenements and hereditaments together with his windmill situate and laying in Martham and West Somerton in Norfolk with their appurtenances unto Mary (4) his beloved wife her heirs and assigns forever after paying thereout his just debts and appointed her sole executrix.
Signed by the said Robert Rising (4) in the presents of ? Barry, Wm. ? Jnr., Thomas Doyne.

Robert Rising (4) left the windmill to his wife Mary.

31 st March 1770. By Indemnity of leases and releases this release tripartite and made between Mary Rising (4) widow of the first part Philip Proctor, Thomas Bunn, John Larkman. Robert Bately and William Road Exors of the said Robert Rising (4) of the 2 nd part and Engle Knights (7) of East Somerton Esquire of the third part for the considerations therein mentioned the said Mary Rising (4). Philip Proctor, Thomas Bunn, John Larkman, Robert Bately and William Road did grant and release unto the said Engle Knights (7) all and every the freehold and copyhold messuages, ? and parcels of land, windmill, ? , ? and premises given and devised to the said Mary Rising (4) as aforesaid to hold unto and to the use of the said Engle Knights (7) his heirs and assigns forever.

Mary Rising (4) to Engle Knights Esq. (7)

31 st March 1770. By Indenture quadripartite made between the said John Barber ) of the first part, Anthony Taylor of the second part, the said Engle Knights (7) of the third part and the said Mary Rising (4) of the fourth part for the considerations therein mentioned the said John Barber, did assign unto the said Anthony Taylor all the said premise to hold for all the remainder of the said term in Trust for the said Engle Knights (7) his heirs and assigns

It appears that Anthony Taylor became the tenant of the windmill. Engle Knights Esq. remained the owner.

4 th/5 th July 1782. By Indenture of leases and releases between the said Engle Knights Esq. (7) of the one part and the above named Thomas Rising (5) of the other part the said Engle Knights Esq. (7) in consideration of £290 did part and release unto the said Thomas Rising (5) (with the premises) the windmill and parcel of land wherein the same there stood situate, standing and lying in the East Field of Martham consisting by estimation one rood more or less to hold to the use of the said Thomas Rising (5) his heirs and assigns.
I do acknowledge to have in my possession all the deeds and writings mentioned in this abstract except the last mentioned Indenture of 4th & 5th July 1782 as witness my hand this 5th day of April 1786.

  • = Robert Rising was born in 1704 and was the son of John Rising(8) & Elizabeth Lacey(6).
    He married Mary Watson in 1735. She was born in 1713.
  • = Thomas Rising 1742 to 1794 grand nephew of Robert Lacey 1664 to 1737.
  • = Elizabeth Rising, nee Lacey, 1674 to 1714. Sister of Robert Lacey.
  • = Engle Knights, born about 1718, was Lord of the Manor of Somerton.
  • = John Rising born c1673. Grandfather of Thomas Rising(5)
  • = William Rising. Most likely William Rising 1701 to 1771 of West Somerton
  • = Redemption in this context is the repayment of a mortgage or loan on the windmill.
