Horsham St Faith

Horsham St Faith smock mill was a 3 storey mill that stood on the hill above the old Norwich Road in sight of the the nearby watermill and the two were under the same ownership at least once during their years of operation. By 1891 the mill was no longer in use and occupied part of the site later taken by the 20th century St Faith's crematorium. |
In 1849 the mill was advertised for sale with a single pair of patent sails but by 1853 the mill was using one pair of common sails and one pair of patent sails to drive one pair of 4ft 6ins and one pair of 4ft 8ins French burr stones; a fantail turned the mill into the wind. In 1866 the mill was again advertised for sale with a single pair of patent sails but by 1874 it was working with two pairs of patent sails. |
By 1872 the windmill was being run in conjunction with a steam mill that had been built in a separate building on the same site. The 5 h.p. steam mill drove a single pair of 4 ft stones, a flour mill and jumper. |
William Stackwood moved from where he had been working at Gt_Ellingham_towermill c.1867, having lost his wife Elizabeth and possibly also two of his children. In the last quarter of 1867 he married again at St Faith's, this time to a local girl, Jemima Rayner. However, by 1881 William Stackwood had moved to Marsham where he was working as journeyman miller at Bolwick_watermill. |

A Substantially erected Freehold Tower Timber built WINDMILL having three floors, two patent sails, drives two pairs of French stones, with piece of Land containing about half an acre situate near the Union House in the populous village of Horsham St. Faiths about 4 miles from Norwich, lately occupied by Mr. Richard Eglington deceased. Richard Eglington, miller, farmer and owner of the windmill and the watermill, died on 6th August 1866 leaving his wife Mary as executrix. |
It would appear that William Buckenham bought the smockmill and watermill some time after 1866 and when he decided to move on to the larger Wramplingham_watermill around 1872, he put the smockmill and steam mill on the market in August of that year. It did not immediately sell and he was still advertising the sale in April 1875. However, in October 1872 he had advertised the mills for rent and took William Webb on as a tenant. The mill was again advertised to be let in September 1873, indicating that William Webb had left. William Buckenham was still advertising the mill to be let in September 1875. |
