Barney tower mill stood in Mill Lane, which is a small lane opposite Grange Farm. The mill had patent sails powering two pairs of stones and a flour mill.

Robert Richmond was in severe financial difficulties by 1871, necessitating a Bill of Sale by auction of his mill, horse, harness, cart, household effects etc. However, he was also Briningham village postmaster and miller at Briningham postmill, which he continued to rent until the death of his landlord, William Sexton, who died in 1879.

William Leggatt will Sell by Auction on Monday 25 September 1871 a TOWER CORN MILL with Patent Sails, driving two pairs of Stones with Flour Mill, Going Gears etc. situate at Barney, also the Household Furniture, capital Bay Mare, Miller's Cart, Harness & other effects of Mr. R. Richmond (under a Bill of Sale)
The Sasle will commence with the Mill at 11.30 o'c at the White Horse Inn, Briningham. The other effects will be sold on the premises at 1 o'c.

1871: Robert Richmond, miller, also at Briningham postmill

1871: Bill of Sale by auction of the effects of Robert Richmond due to financial difficulties

Kelly's 1879: John West, miller (also possibly either or also running Barney north or Barney south postmill)

White's 1883: John Atherton, miller (also possibly either or also running Barney north or Barney south postmill)
White's 1883: James West, miller (also possibly either or also running Barney north or Barney south postmill)
