LB Book

An A5-size paperback book, designed as a guide to visiting and understanding
the county's best mills.

The book examines over 30 mills
those which were used for corn milling and for marshland drainage
as well as several 'unusual' mill sites.

It describes the personalities behind the mills
the millers who operated them and the millwrights who built and maintained them
and also looks at Norfolk's modern alternatives to the traditional windmill.

Example pages from the book are shown on the website listed below.

I am so pleased to tell you that planning permission to convert Tilty
Watermill in Essex has been REFUSED by the planning inspector and the secretary of state!!

Now begins the harder task of trying to secure a future for the mill.

Tilty Mills under threat from housing

As you may be aware one of the last complete, intact and restorable
watermills left is threatened with house conversion.
The watermill in question is Tilty, in NW Essex.
Tilty is a grade 2 star listed brick built watermill, built about 250 years
ago on the site of the earlier monastic mill of Tilty Abbey.
The mill still has all its machinery and water supply to and from the mill
intact and as such would be an excellent candidate for restoration.
Unfortunately the current owner and council have allowed it to deteriorate and
it is now threatened with plans to incorporate it into a
'5 bedroom barn style development'.

The secretary of state has ordered a planning inquiry to be held as the mill
is of such national historical importance.
The planning inspectorate is still accepting objections to this plan.
