The Food Standards Agency has recommended that all flour is fortified with the addition of folic acid. The object appears to be to force all producers to include folic acid thereby removing all choice for consumers.

The cost of the necessary equipment is in excess of £20,000 and this would be well beyond the means of many of the smaller producers such as Letheringsett and many mills would be forced to close.

The Soil Association and The Traditional Cornmillers' Guild among other intend to apply for exemption from this recommendation.
