This mill on the Denes possibly had the shortest working life of any mill in the county.


On 29th September 1800 the mill was leased to Richard Abigail for 21 years from at Ground Rent of £3. 3s.


Lease to Richard ABIGAIL
Be it remembered that by an Indenture of Lease dated the 21st day of April 1801 made between the Mayor, Aldermen, Burgesses and Commonalty of the Borough of Great Yarmouth in the County of Norfolk of the one part and Richard ABIGAIL of Great Yarmouth aforesaid, Miller, of the other part. In consideration of the Yearly Rent and the Covenants therein reserved and contained on the part of the said Richard ABIGAIL to be paid and performed. The said Mayor, Aldermen, Burgesses and Commonalty Did demise, lease and to farm lett unto the said Richard ABIGAIL his executors, administrators and assigns. ALL THAT piece or parcel of Ground part and parcel of the Corporation or Town's Waste situate lying and being on the Denes of Great Yarmouth aforesaid (lately granted to and since assigned up to Robert ROLL) extending forty yards North and South and forty yards East and West. With liberty to and for the said Richard ABIGAIL and his executors, administrators and assigns to pale in and enclose the same and erect a Windmill thereon, such mill to be used as a poke or Grist Mill. To hold to the said Richard ABIGAIL his executors, administrators and assigns from the 29th day of September
then last past for the term of 21 years at the yearly rent of £3. 3. payable at the Hall called the Tollhouse Hall in Great Yarmouth aforesaid.
N.B. This lease contains restrictions on the Tenant from assigning Premises without license and other usual Covenants.

Built for Richard ABERGAIL in 1800 but by 1808 he is no longer paying rent and by 1811 the Town re-leased the site "where a windmill formerly stood, leased to R. ABERGAIL" to John George, with liberty to build a mill, but there is no record of him having done so.

All that POST WINDMILL with the land and appurtenances to the same being on the Denes in Great Yarmouth and now occupied by Mr. Richard ABIGAIL the proprietor.
The land on which the mill stands is leasehold of the Corporation of Yarmouth, rent £3. 3. per year. Fifteen years of the lease were unexpired on the 21st day of April last.
