Edgefield postmill stood to the west of the village, alongside the mill house on a hill and area known as The Mount. The postmill was built as a replacement for an earlier postmill that had been destroyed by a fire in 1815, which had in turn been built to replace an even earlier smockmill on the same site. The new postmill had a roundhouse and drove 2 pairs of stones and a flour mill.

Edgefield ... is a large straggling village, in three divisions, called The Mount, The Green, and The Street ... George Baker Ballachey, Esq., who has a handsome seat here, and is the owner of The Mount, a lofty eminence, commanding a view of the sea and 30 churches.
